THE STORY OF EBONY - A DOG'S LIFEFE This is the story of a female german shepherd called
Ebony. She has been ill for most of her life and has cost her owners
somewhere in the region of £15,000 (approx $30,000 or 20,000
euros) in vet bills just to keep her
alive
. Ebony is seven years
old and was diagnosed early on with mega-colon a condition which causes her colon to cease working properly resulting each time in severe constipation, dehydration and pain leading to death if untreated. She is unable to have a normal diet and has to live on small amounts of very expensive specialist dried food just to keep the illness under control. Not for Ebony the normal doggy treats that most of our canine friends enjoy. A juicy bone could be fatal. It was hoped that she would "grow out of it" as one vet suggested but to date there is no sign of the condition abating. Virtually once every month she has had to be rushed to the vet's practice to be "un-bunged". It would be comical if it were not so deadly serious for the poor
pooch. . On top of this a couple of years back she developed a sore patch on her chest which refused to heal despite the vet's best efforts. Fearing that it was cancer she was taken to the Queens Veterinary School at Cambridge for a biopsy. The results revealed that she had probably grazed her chest on something but had subsequently had the misfortune to have the wound contaminated with some sort of spore which was causing a fungal infection of the deeper tissues and it was this that was eating the bone and cartilage in her sternum (breastbone). Once again astronomical vet's fees loomed large as she had to have an operation to thoroughly cleanse the entire area and allow it to drain. Poor Ebony!. Even poorer owners. The amazing thing about the spores is that they were normally only found in Africa so no-one could work out how on earth she became infected with them. After this , just for a while, it looked as if she would be allowed to have a near normal life but then disaster struck again. Ebony developed a severe ear infection which despite treatment resulted in a perforated eardrum. The infection never really went away and, although her immune system was able to fight it most of the time, when her health was affected by her other problems it became too much for her and she had to have surgery to remove the infected tissue. The other ear became infected but not to the same extent thank god. Finally after further ear infections and two such operations she is now scheduled to have ablation of the ear canal which means that her entire inner ear will be removed and blocked off to avoid the ingress of any further infection.Hopefully for Ebony this will mean the end of a painful and debilitating ear condition but it also means that she will lose her hearing on that side. It may also cause damage to the facial nerve which would result in paralysis and prevent her from being able to keep the ear erect. Click here to see Ebony after
ear surgery.
For her owners it means yet another huge bill. Something that as an ordinary working class couple they will struggle to pay because they love their dog. To them she is one of the family and deserves every chance of a safe, happy, pain-free existence. So there you have the story
of Ebony. Why bother? some folk would ask. It's only a dog. Put the damn thing down. Spend the money on a good holiday and forget her. To her owners that would be unthinkable and callous beyond belief. Life is precious.
So I decided to put Ebony's story on the internet in the hope that I could reach just some of the millions of people out there who love animals as much as I do. This website could help to generate some income to help Ebony's owners with the veterinary fees. Every time someone clicks on a link that interests them and signs up it will be a little bit more for Ebony. I have included some pictures of Ebony as a pup and on her better days. I hope you will view them and think of this courageous little dog who has been afflicted throughout her short life by so much pain, misery and illness. I am also putting out now a direct and unashamed appeal to anyone whose heart has been touched by this story If you can spare just a small contribution, if there are enough people out there who care, we can set up a fund to ensure that Ebony has the treatment she needs when she needs it which is likely to be for the rest of her natural life
